Legislative Policy Platforms

Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County is advocating for racial justice, equity, and the protection of black, brown, and other multi-marginalized lives. These legislative priorities focus on addressing root causes such as systemic racism, promoting police accountability, and supporting policies that improve the well-being of black and brown communities.
Racial, Social, and Criminal Justice Reform


  • Two Notable areas of reform: Traffic stops and independent prosecutor legislation. 
  • End Mass Incarceration: Advocating for the reduction of incarceration rates in direct relation to Black and Indigenous communities, and promoting alternatives to incarceration such as restorative justice programs. 
  • Abolish Cash Bail: Eliminating the cash bail system, which disproportionately affects Black people and other marginalized communities. 
  • Sentencing Reform: Advocating for policies that reduce harsh sentencing laws, especially for drug offenses, which disproportionately impact Black individuals.
  • Juvenile Justice reform: Advocating for all juvenile justice needs.
  • Community-Led Safety Initiatives: Supporting community-based models of safety and conflict resolution that do not rely on police, such as restorative justice programs and community mediation services.
  • Transformative Justice: Advocating for justice systems that address harm and provide healing and rehabilitation instead of punitive measures.
  • Black and brown Immigrant Rights: Ensuring that the unique challenges faced by Black and brown immigrants, including deportation, detention, and discrimination, are addressed in policy.
  • Support for Sanctuary Policies: Advocating for sanctuary city policies that protect immigrants from deportation and support their right to live and work without fear of detention.
Economic Justice and Equity
  • Equitable Access to Economic Opportunities: Advocating for policies that promote job creation and equitable wages for Black communities, as well as addressing employment discrimination.
  • Housing Justice: Supporting policies that combat housing discrimination, increase affordable housing, and address gentrification in Black neighborhoods.
  • Wealth Redistribution and Reparations: Pushing for measures that address the racial wealth gap, including reparations, access to capital, and initiatives to close the wealth disparity between Black and white communities.
  • Education Equity: Supporting policies that address disparities in education, such as funding for Black-majority schools, anti-racist curricula, and Black and brown student support systems.
Health and Environmental Justice
  • Access to Healthcare: Advocating for increased access to healthcare for Black communities, with an emphasis on addressing racial disparities in health outcomes.
  • Mental Health Services: Increasing access to mental health care, particularly community-based care, to address trauma, especially related to systemic violence and racism.
  • Reproductive Rights: Advocating for the protection of reproductive rights for Black women, including access to affordable and equitable healthcare, maternal care, and reproductive choice.
  • Addressing Maternal Mortality Disparities: Focusing on the racial disparities in maternal mortality rates, particularly for Black women, and advocating for policies that improve access to quality prenatal and postnatal care.
  • Environmental Justice: Ensuring that Black communities have access to clean air, water, and healthy living environments, and addressing environmental racism, which disproportionately impacts Black communities
Voting Rights and Political Empowerment
  • Voter Protection: Advocating for policies that protect voting rights, prevent voter suppression, and ensure that Black communities have equal access to the political process.
  • Black Political Representation: Supporting initiatives that increase political representation of Black people at local, state, and federal levels, and advocating for policies that ensure Black voices are heard in the political process.

We endorse political candidates aligned with our mission, and build coalitions with like-minded organizations, to educate our community on the importance of civic engagement.

Black & Brown Business Support

In 2025, we plan to launch our Small Black and Brown New Business Sponsorship Pilot Program, designed to provide financial support and resources to emerging businesses led by Black and Brown entrepreneurs. This initiative reflects our commitment to economic empowerment and fostering long-term sustainability for marginalized communities.
